Names of Jesus.

"The Names of God the Father and the Holy Spirit."

Though God the Father, the Holy Spirit and the Son are one, they do have different names depending upon the circumstances at that time, so for better understanding I have placed the names of Jesus, the Christ on a separate page.

Psalm 69:30

"I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving."

Daniel 2:20

"Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:"

In the Old Testament there are three words of basic importance, "ël", "lÖhim", and "Yahweh,"(Jephvah). We need to examine the relationship between these words.

"El."

This is a general name for God or god, whether it is the true God or a false god / idol.

"Elyon, El Elyon."

This has the meaning of "The most high God"

"Elohim"

This is normally plural but is often used in a singular meaning, which means there is only one supreme diety. Any word which is referring to a person, object or place is treated as a noun. This means that it has the idea that everything belongs to the deity, in contrast to belonging to man or any other creation.
See Numbers 23:19, (KJV)

"19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?"

There is only one supreme and true God who is very real and with all the power possible.
See Genesis 1:1, (KJV)

"1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."

"Jehovah"

This word is normally translated "the Lord." The Hebrew text was considered too sacred and never spoken. they wrote it as "YHWH" leaving out the vowels. Strictly speaking "Yahweh" is the only name of God and is regularly used by the Patriarchs. Note, that if the original word was "Yahweh" the translation in most bibles will be in capitals.

"Yahweh Elohim"

An example of these two words combine together is found in the text of Genesis 2:4 to Genesis 3. The two words are related and can be used as the name of God, but they are not identical or interchangeable.
See verse 4.

"These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,"

"Eloah"

A singular form of Elohim In the Old Testament mainly found in poetry.

A person or object has been given a name for a personal reference. God, from the beginning, supplied names for His created objects and people, in some cases the personal name was very specific.
See Genesis 17:5, (KJV)

"5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee."

God was very careful and holy as He reveal His own special name, which meant everything.
Exodus 3:13-14 (KJV)

"13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you."

Moses would not consider this to be a new name for God, nor is it called a "name", it is actually showing the attributes and power of God.
Exodus 3:15. (KJV)

"15 And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD GOD of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations."

Exodus 33:19 (KJV)

"19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy."

Exodus 34:5-6 (KJV)

"5 And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD.
6 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,"

In the biblical text you will often find "Jehovah" with another word, when translated gives us "the Lord is my banner" or "The Lord is peace" or "the Lord is there." These are not the "names of God" but referring to an event involving God.

There are a number of "Names of God" given in the scriptures, each signifying one or more attributes or behaviours of the Holy Trinity. We have tried to list where the name is used and the meaning of the Name.
The idea is to give you a spiritual understanding of the personality of God and help in the worship and your life for Christ.
