"Give us this day our daily bread." |
Continuing our thoughts on our relationship with God and our worship through the words of the Lord’s Prayer. "9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. We have been considering our relationship with God through the words of the Lord’s Prayer. We have been examining our relationship with God as our Father in heaven, and then moved onto considered three petitions we have made to Him. "Give us this day our daily bread.""25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? What are your prayer’s like, that is assuming you do pray to the Father God each day? Jesus was the God-Man and as such had a physical body like each of us and knew and felt the various needs and requirements of our physical body, the food, clothes, protection and a means of getting these things through a job. He was a carpenter and had to make objects for others, this gave him a wage so that he could eat and live as a man. The word translated as "daily" was normally used for objects or goods which had a limited life like food and so would have had to be purchased each day, the word is used in a shopping list. So Jesus is indicating that this action in prayer was to be done each day, not weekly on a Sunday, however it should not be like a shopping list, "I want the following.......". "Give Us"God has the power and the ability to supply anything we ask, if it is according to His Will. "17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." "11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?" "25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? The words" Daily Bread " used in the request is not just indicating a loaf of bread but all the personal, bodily needs like food but also clothing and work. We are instructed to ask for all our needs but God the Father may have a special reason, peculiar to himself for keeping us waiting for some of our "needs." God is all knowing and could have delayed for a reason which will be ultimately better for us and give Him the greater glory, nothing is impossible for God. " 2 I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be with holden from thee." "20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us," "13 I can do all things through Christ which strengthen me." "25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?" God is full of love for His creation, for each one of us, He has already sent His Son to take the punishment for the sins of the world, He wants to help, to supply all our needs, we just have to trust and believe in Him. It is of interest to note that the words used by Jesus, "Give us this day our daily bread. " are referring to more than one, not "I" or "me" but "us" and "our." Our prayers should also involve the needs of others. "4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others." Our prayers must always include thanks for all that He has already given, His love, His forgiveness, for our salvation for each one of us. Thank You My Father God.For my daily bread. |
