What does it mean "Jesus is Lord?"

Luke 2:10-11.

"8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger."

You may think that this story only applies to Christmas, but there are some very important words given to the shepherds at that time, the angels said "a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. "
The title of "Lord" for Jesus is used far more then the words "Jesus the Saviour." Jesus is called "Lord" 747 times in the New Testament. So we have to ask, what is your relationship with Jesus Christ? Is He lord of your life? Or are you still thinking about "making" Him Lord?
Let us examine these statements and questions.
Is He Lord of your possesion, what you own? Is He Lord of your abilities or talents? Is He Lord of your interests, your time? Is He Lord of your wealth?
You may be saying "I believe that Jesus is Lord." But, is He really your Lord? The real point is that Jesus is already Lord, whether you have accepted that fact or not. Are you willing to make Jesus your Lord?

As the shepherds listened to the words of the angels, what did those words mean to them? The Jewish shepherds knew that the word "Lord" was referring to the name Jehovah, God Almighty. The angel was saying that the new born baby was co-equal, co-eternal with God Almighty,, this baby is the "Jehovah which saves." The name Jesus, or Joshua in the Old Testament, means "Jehovah saves.".

The story continues, we are told that the shepherds immediatly went to find this special baby and after finding the baby as told by the angels, now went and told the town and neighborhood what had happened to them. Please note that by this very act they could have put their lives in danger because the world at the time was controlled by the Roman Empire and so under the control of the Roman Emperor whose name was Caesar. The country of Israel was under the control of this Emperor and they must submit to the claim that "Caesar is Lord." If any Jews failed to accept this title then their life could be in serious danger.

For any one under this Roman control to say that "this baby is Lord" and not Caesar would result in their death. This action would often take place in the Roman Coliseum "sports" in a terrible and painful way.

Do you believe that Jesus is the Lord and really mean it?
If He is then there are some very special events associated with your confession and accepting that Jesus is the Lord of your life.

It makes your salvation secure.

What does this mean? The sacrifice and death of Jesus resulted in the gift of salvation,He took your punishment through the shedding of His blood and death on the cross. It is not possible to accept this free gift and not accept who Jesus is. Look again at what the angel said, "a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord."- a Saviour who is also the Lord of all things as the Son of God.
The shepherds understood the meaning of the angels words because they were already expecting and looking for a Messiah, as prophesied in the Old Testament. However, many of the government and religious leaders of that time rejected this announcement, that is why Herod had all the babies, up to 2 years old, killed after the Wise Men’s visit later.

Are you saved? Is Jesus really your Lord? The gift of salvation and Lordship of Jesus go together.
Romans 10:9.

"9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. "

You may say that I accepted Jesus as my Saviour, but the Bible does not actually say "accept Him as Saviour, the Bible attaches other conditions for salvation:-
1) "Believe He died in your place."
2) "Believe God raised Him from the dead."
3) "Accept that you are a sinner and need forgiveness."
4) "Confess with your mouth that He is your Lord."

5) Then you are saved.

If you do not fulfill all these conditions, then are you really saved?

If Lord then Jesus is also our Master.

Matthew 6:24.

"24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon."

If you have taken Jesus as your Saviour, then He is Lord of your life and you do not now need to take any decisions without His guidance and approval, for He is Lord and Master, he bought you with His life. Our life, or actions should always be to please Him. It does not matter if I displease anyone else, the Lord Jesus Christ must be the centre of all my life. You have made a very big decision to please Jesus so now you are able to take all your questions and decisions to Him in prayer and so seek His guidance. Jesus said, "Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: " we do not need to add anything to the Lord Jesus Christ.
No one can serve two masters, The Lordship of Jesus means that He is the first and only. If you really mean that "Jesus is Lord of my life," then your salvation must be secure.
Matthew 6:33.

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

If Jesus is Lord, then Satan has no power.

Satan hopes that a Christian will never really understand the authority and power we have when we each have the Lord of Heaven and Earth living in our hearts, look at the verse we started with, "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. - a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. "

Satan has been expecting God to send a Saviour right from the Garden of Eden when he made Adam and Eve disobey God.
Genesis 3:14,15.

"And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel."

God promised that one day a Messiah will come and ultimately destroy Satan and give Salvation to Mankind. "I will put enmity between thee and the woman." A long term fight was promised with the serpent and each descendent of man and the serpent or Satan’ devils.
It is interesting that it is the "woman" that is the "seed," not the man, which is normally considered. No mention of Adam or his descendants, only the woman. In other words we have a prophecy of the Virgin birth right at the beginning. "thou shalt bruise his heel." but this Child is going to crush Satan’s head. This Child lived with Mankind, was crucified, then rose again, the Son of God, The Lord of all things, and if you have asked Him into your heart, then you have access to that Power, He is Lord of all.

When you submit to the Lordship of Christ you have access to His power and Satan is totally subject to this power, remember that Satan is a created being, he was created by God as a special, powerful angel sometime in the past, but he is still subject to the control of God.
Revelation 12:10,11.

"10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death."

What was the testimony of these people? That Jesus Christ is Lord, I belong to Him because He bought me and is my Lord and master.
Hebrews 2:14-16.

"14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
16 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham."

Ultimately Satan will be destroyed.

Why was it necessary for Jesus the Son of God, to be born as a human?

Why did Jesus, the Son of God, have to leave heaven and all the glory to become a human? Why a virgin Birth?

God the Father is Spirit, He is eternal and so cannot die. Yet from the beginning "without shedding of blood is no remission."
Hebrews 9:14.

"14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?"

Romans 6:23.

"23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

Ezekiel 18:4.

"4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die."

Jesus had to become a human and take on flesh and blood so that He could become a holy, perfect, sacrifice in our place upon the cross. In so doing He destroyed the kingdom of Satan. So Satan knows that he will soon be punished by God, so he is frightened of Jesus and those who have made Jesus their Lord.

Romans 14:11.

"11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God."

Philippians 2:9-11.

"9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

I am not asking you to confess that Jesus is your Lord right now because one day everyone, yes, everyone will have to confess that Jesus is the Lord. Even Satan will bow before Jesus Christ and confess that He is Lord.

Is Jesus Christ your Lord now?

Just a final thought. Jesus spoke these words in Mark 8:34-38,
"34 And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
35 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."
