Barnabas, called also Joses.

Barnabas became one of Paul’s closest friends. It was only through the action of Barnabas that Paul was allowed into the fellowship in the Jerusalem church, they were still very scared of Paul, Acts 9:26-28.
The name Barnabas has the meaning "son of encouragement." He seemed to lived up to this name in the spread of the Gospel, when the message of salvation reached the Gentiles in Antioch, it was Barnabas who was sent to encourage them in their faith, Acts 11:19-24.
From the beginning Barnabas ministered to the Gentile believers. It was Barnabas who encouraged Paul to help minister in the church at Antioch, Acts 11:25-30.

"25 Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul:
26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch."

Barnabas travelled with Paul on the first missionary journey, Acts 13:1-14:28.

"1 Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work where unto I have called them.
3 And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away."

When Paul had problems with John Mark it was Barnabas who offered to help the young John Mark, and in so doing upset Paul, Acts 13:13;

"13 Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John(Mark) departing from them returned to Jerusalem."

Acts 15:36-41.

" 36 And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do.
37 And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark.
38 But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.
Later, Paul had great benefit from the assistance of John Mark in the ministries."

Col. 4:10;

"10 Aristarchus my fellow prisoner saluteth you, and Marcus, sister’s son to Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, receive him;) "

2 Tim 4:11.

"11 Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry."

Barnabas was a Levite who shared his possessions with other disciples

"36 And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,
37 Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet."

Barnabas goes to Antioch to find Paul, the brings him to Antioch

"25 Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket.
26 And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple.
27 But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus."

Barnabas accompanies Paul to Jerusalem

"30 Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul."

Barnabas returns with Paul to Antioch

"25 And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark."

Barnabas goes with Paul to Seleucia

Barnabas goes with Paul to Iconium

"1 And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed."

Barnabas is called Jupiter

"12 And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker.
13 Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people.
14 Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out, "

Barnabas goes to Derbe

"20 Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, and came into the city: and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe. "

Barnabas is sent to Jerusalem

"1 And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.
2 When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question."

"1 Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus with me also.
2 And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.
3 But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:
4 And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:"

Barnabas and Paul disagree and go on separate missions

"36 And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do.

38 But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.
39 And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus; "

"6 Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?"

Barnabas, his spiritual life

"24 For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord. "

Barnabas is prepared to die for Jesus

"25 It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,
26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. "
