JEREMIAH |
Jeremiah is able to see beyond the Exile.Comfort after disappointment. Jeremiah 30 to 33Jeremiah looks forward to the new day for Israel, God has revealed to him the future for those in exile and those who were left behind. Jeremiah can see two events, the return of the exiles from Babylon and the further future event when God will gather the Jews from all the nations at the End Times. God now speaks to Jeremiah through a dream and he is instructed to write the words he has received from God in a book(scroll), God tells Jeremiah that the northern kingdom, which had been taken to Assyria in 722 B.C. and Judah would eventually return as one nation, |
The sick Jewish nation. For many years the Jews had been turning away from God, reaching a peak in the time of Jeremiah. The Lord reminds the Jews that He had used other nations to "wound"and / or punish them, verse 14. God had used Assyria to punish Israel and Babylon to deal with Judah. However, the Gentile nations will eventually be punished for their treatment of Israel in the last days, verse 16. Then the Jews will be under their Messiah. A New Nation and people.Jeremiah describes the people of God, how God had needed to break them and then rebuild them. Then turns to the future and what God would provide, a united nation, a united people. "I am the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people." Jeremiah 31:1. A New Covenant. Not a repeat of the Law given after Egypt but a new covenant which is written in the peoples heart, Jeremiah 31:35-40. This covenant will be permanent, God will never break His promises. |
A New Land and Kingdom.Jeremiah is instructed by God to prove his faith in the future by buying a piece of property when conditions could not be worse, Jeremiah was putting his money as proof of his words. An illogical action.King Zedekiah has not liked what Jeremiah has said about him so Jeremiah is now in prison. As a prisoner Jeremiah would not be in so much danger when the Babylonians enter the city a few months later, this action by the king may have been how God was protecting Jeremiah from the coming disaster. Jeremiah, in faith, obeys God instruction. The sale was carried out, legal documents signed and transferred. Had Jeremiah gone mad? investing in a worthless piece of land. Jeremiah shows his faith."Am I a fool?" Jeremiah now takes the problem to God in prayer, he starts with a time of worship, accepts why this situation exists then asks God for guidance. The response."Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me? " verse 27. Yes the people are about to be punished, they are evil but eventually "I will bring them back to this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely. They shall be My people, and I will be their God;" This final part of the prophesy seems to apply to the "End Times", "gather them out of all countries," not just Babylon. Finally God tells Jeremiah that the fields will be bought and sold in the future. verses 43,44. A second message.God now speaks a second time to Jeremiah, "I will show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.", verse 3. You can only reach Me through a believing faith and prayer. The future may look bad for the nation but they will be cleaned and restored. One day everyone will praise the Lord. It will happen just as day and night happen. |
