THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Apostle Paul met disciples of John the Baptist during one of his missionary visits to the Ephesian church and when he asked them about the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, their reply, "We have not so much as heard whether there is any Holy Spirit" must have given Paul a shocked, Acts 19:2.

"He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. "

We hope that the following notes will help you understand the position, power and effect of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Trinity.

The Holy Spirit is a Person.

(1) As a Person is able to live, help, know, control a believer.
John 14:17,26;
"17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. "
John 15:26;
"26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:"
1 Cor. 2:10,11;
"10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God."
1 Cor 12:11.
"11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will."

(2) The Holy Spirit reproves, instructs, helps, glorifies, intercedes.
John 16:7-13;
"7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
Of sin, because they believe not on me;
Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come."
Romans 8:26.
"26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. "

(3) The Holy Spirit behaves as a person, not as an object. The Holy Spirit is a person.
Luke 12:12
"For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say."
Acts 5:32;
"And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him."

"For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; "

Hebrew 2:4;
"God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?"
Hebrew 3:7;
"Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, "
2 Peter 1:21
"For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. "

The Holy Spirit at work.

The Holy Spirit was involved with the birth of Jesus.
(1) Mary is "found with child of the Holy Spirit" Matthew 1:18
(2) An angel tells Joseph in a dream that the baby "which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit" Matthew 1:20

Luke 1:25-28
(4) The early life of Jesus.
The New Testament records give very little information of the early life of Jesus on earth apart from the events recorded in Luke.
We are told that the "Child grew, and waxed strong, filled with wisdom, becoming full of wisdom and the grace of God was upon him." Then follows the story of the visit to the temple.
The behaviour of the Child Jesus is evidence of the guidance of the Spirit.
Luke 2:40ff

In the Gospels the writers placed much emphasis on the actions of the Holy Spirit at the Baptism of Jesus.
After Jesus is anointed with the Holy Spirit at His baptism, He is now able to start His ministry as the Messiah.
The Power of the Holy Spirit gives His human side the power for the coming temptations. The Power to carry out the ministry and healing.
The power to suffer the cross and death for the sin of mankind.
The power of His resurrection and ascension.
The coming of the Holy Spirit upon Jesus allows Him to give the Holy Spirit to His disciples at Pentecost.

Functions of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit convicts the lost sinner and reveals Christ. John 16:7-11.
When the sinner believes in Christ, he is then born of the Spirit. John 3:1-8
The believer is baptized at conversion by the Spirit so that he becomes a part of the spiritual body of Christ. 1 Cor 12:12-14.
At conversion the believer is sealed by the Holy Spirit, this guarantees that he will one day share in the glory of Christ. Eph 1:13-14
The believer has a responsibility to the Holy Spirit who is living in his body. 1 Cor 6:19-20.
Believers should be filled with the Spirit or "controlled by the Spirit." Eph 5:18-21.
This filling is a continuous action, just like a person needing to drink clean pure water each day. John 7:37-39.
The Christian should walk in the Spirit. Gal 5:16, 25.
The Holy Spirit does not ever leave the true believer, but disobedience can mean that the Spirit cannot give the Christian the joy and power available as part of Christian life. John 14:16.
The Holy Spirit comes into the believer at conversion and then continues to work in them, to build up the body of Christ. Col 2:19
Eph 4:16.
The sinner can resist the Spirit. Acts 7:51
If a Christian does not obey God, then he is hurting the Spirit. Eph 4:30.
Disobedience may prevent the work of the Spirit in a Believer. 1 Thess 5:19.
